The sorts of tensions you express here are being experienced by preachers all over this synod and far beyond. Your willingness to share your own journey is a gift to all these others. I am grateful that you are a part of this synod. By the way, in this regard, and as a follow-up to your reference to Bonhoeffer, lately I have been reading - and find helpful - the book "Preaching in Hitler's Shadow: Sermons of Resistance in the Third Reich," edited by Dean Stroud and published in 2013.Bishop Bill Gafkjenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16670042437751348175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3653414895077719945.post-85220991821633374162017-02-25T06:50:06.602-08:002017-02-25T06:50:06.602-08:00This is great, Leah! Sorely needed in our "a...This is great, Leah! Sorely needed in our "arsenal" of responsibilities for the preacher. I often wonder what would have taken place had I experienced the same sort of consciousness about the ecological crisis when I was 24 year old Youth Minister that happened to me when I was 58. It was then the time that Ronald Reagan ran and was elected President. The Church I served as Youth Minister was a very conservative American Baptist church in Cincinnati. I may well have gotten myself in deep trouble. Especially if you transplant the ecological awareness of the conditions now and put them back there in 1979-80 (which was a time when there was some awareness of the dangers, but the scientific community had not yet begun to sound public warnings).
With the task ahead of us in the church for Reformation (aka "Recovery" of an ecological theology and those narratives lost or "reinterpreted" by most Western ideologies), there is a crucial role, of course, for the preacher, among all the other institutional structures that exist to help build and teach the flock on how we participate in the Kingdom/Reign of God (or the "God movement" as Clarence Jordan called it). We have a lot of modern day gnosticism to battle (I see it in those who say "The Church shouldn't be 'political', as if these things can be separated, or as if the ecological ethics are a a partisan issue). Preaching is certainly the most "up front" purveyor of content representing the church (particularly in the eyes of the general public), and so this is an important area to tackle. This is an excellent summary and analysis of that task, as well as encouragement to be strong and preach with integrity. Thank you!Dalehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18110232670873989959noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3653414895077719945.post-70747721491116082017-02-14T20:48:39.517-08:002017-02-14T20:48:39.517-08:00Thank you so much for this post. Second, a...First, thank you for taking the survey. Second, a correction. The survey does NOT ask for the congregation's name. Zip code and name of town are requested in order to correlate data according to geography. Third, only one question asks preachers to speculate - and that is the question estimating what percentage of their congregants are conservative, moderate or liberal. The reason for this question is to gather information on a preacher's willingness to approach controversial issues given political orientations of her or his congregants. Yes, the preacher is being asked to make their best guess. But even a best guess provides important information about what a preacher believes they are facing when dealing with challenging justice issues.

Thanks again for being willing to engage on this important topic! As dark and troubling as these times are, and as frightening the prospect of 4 years with a ego-maniacal reality TV host as President, there is simultaneously a great uprising around the globe of people who seek a more just and compassionate world. Standing Rock has become the symbol of this new and inspired (in-spirit) unity.

The incredible beauty of Standing Rock is the fact that it has captured so many hearts and minds. The indigenous people, the veterans and all those who have gathered there in support are demonstrating to the world the power of non-violent resistance and compassionate community. In spite of disappointments and the belief systems you discuss here and the continued plunder and pillaging of the earth by corporate behemoths, we must keep the faith.

We had become complacent, but can no longer afford to be so. We are ALL on the front lines. We must stand as one and continue to raise the frequency of this energy of peaceful resistance until its beautiful resonance is a song heard throughout the earth. Thank you for your powerful part in this.

I will never forget the first time I met you - in your black clerical-collar shirt with "Where would Jesus frack?" on the back. I looked at you and thought to myself, "I love that woman."
I still do.
In solidarity, my friend.
PREACH - ON!
#NODAPL #MNIWICONI #LETGOANDLOVEBarb Jarmoskahttps://www.facebook.com/barbara.jarmoskanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3653414895077719945.post-52902856109826772122016-11-30T13:47:59.538-08:002016-11-30T13:47:59.538-08:00This is wonderful, Rev. His love and compassion has not changed at all, for thousands of years. Jesus went through many temptations and face challenges and still shared his love and ministry with everyone, as Christians this is what we do and need to do everyday, no matter what.
